an interview with: dear jane

SB: What troubles you most about today's corporate music?

Dear Jane: Our band just loves music period, corporate or otherwise. If a band is good there is no reason not to like them just because they're on a major label. You can always argue that most major label bands are contrived, watered down and boring, and it seems to be more so today. That's just the way things are, and it makes the hunt to find good bands driven by great musicianship that much more exciting, difficult and rewarding in the end.

SB: You guys have a great sound. Where did you record and how long did it take?

DJ: Our first EP was recorded with a friend of ours. His name is Peacefire. He has a home studio so we took our time with the recording. All in all the recording portion took us about 6 months. Good thing we weren't on the "clock" so-to-speak. Then we mixed and mastered at Silo Recording studios with the awesome Julius Butty. Alexisonfire did their "Watch Out" record at Silo as well. We were privileged to work with someone so incredibly talented and experienced. We just finished recording our second EP with Julius at Silo. It's not mastered yet, but everyone who hears it seems to be very impressed. We hope to have this EP released by the end of this year.

SB: As a band who do you look up to for creativity?

DJ: We all come from such varied backgrounds that it really is hard to say. Collectively our influences are as vast as the likes of old Bowie, 70's rock and 80's new wave such as the Psychedelic Furs, The Cars, The Clash, The Cure etc. We also take what we can from our contemporaries in bands like My Chemical Romance, A Static Lullaby, Cursive, Alexisonfire etc. Believe it or not - you can find bands like Jay-Z, No Doubt, and Kelly Clarkson on mixed CD's that are in our band van.

SB: When someone listens to a Dear Jane song, what do you want them to take away after listening to your record?

DJ: We want everyone who listens to our music to interoperate it in their own personal way. We feel that the emotion that is conveyed through our music speaks for itself and that whatever the listener takes from that experience is really what it "should" be. Hopefully the fans will take our music and feel understood, inspired, and energized. Perhaps if they think that we're good musicians, that's OK too!
